“Wo ist der Kater?”
(Where is the tomcat?)
This stein, titled “Vexierbield” (Picture Puzzle), has the same body type as those found at No. (P1), but has been listed separately here due to the unusual nature of the decoration. The puzzle to be solved is based on the fact that in Germany the tomcat symbolizes a hangover.
As may be seen in the central image detail (below center), the question posed by the gnomes is: “Where is the tomcat?” The answer, graphically illustrated on the base (below right), is “At the bottom of the stein,” where a tomcat may be found with drink in hand (or paw).
