“Wo ist der Affe?”
(Where is the Monkey?)
This stein, titled “Vexierbield” (Picture Puzzle), has the same body type as those found at No. (P1), but has been listed separately here due to the unusual nature of the decoration. The puzzle to be solved is based on the fact that in Germany, as well as in many other countries throughout the world, the monkey is symbolic of drunkenness.
As may be seen in the central image detail (below center), the question posed by the gnomes is: “Where is the monkey?” The answer, graphically illustrated on the base (below right), is “At the bottom of the stein,” where a drunken monkey may be found along with a hand-inked decoration number (140).
