Faithful Eckart was a character originally created in a 16th century farce by German writer Georg Wickram. However, Faithful Eckart is far more popularly recalled as the subject of an 1813 poem (Der getreue Eckart) by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The text on the lid is the last stanza of Goethe’s poem. The Rip Van Winkle variation of this stein was likely intended to enhance sales in English speaking countries.
