This stein honors Josef Viktor von Scheffel (1826-1886), pictured at the top of the arch above the center scene. The three scenes surrounding the stein are taken from von Scheffel’s famous series of “Rodensteinliedern” (Rodenstein Songs), including: “Rodenstein” (right), a very serious drinker who donates an entire town to Heidelberg University; “Perkeo” (below left), the legendary dwarf of Heidelberg castle; and “Hildebrand and Hadubrand” (below right), the tragic father and son warriors.
