The scene on this stein is drawn from a 10th century poem (Waltharius Manu Fortis). It depicts Hildegund, daughter of the King of Burgundy, serving wine to Walter, her fiancé and King of Aquitaine; Gunther, King of the Franks; and Hagen, a Frankish nobleman, following an epic battle in which all three were seriously wounded.
