Although it may appear to be Latin at first glance, the letter string on this stein and on its mate (No. 2191), were actually phonetic puzzles that explained the “joke” depicted on the stein. When “sounded out” in 19th century colloquial German dialect, the text on this stein reads: “Hörst t’ nix? Beim Xaver wird frisch anzapt. I trink n’ o Mas.” which converts more formally to: “Hörst du nichts? Beim Xaver wird frisch anzapft. Ich trinke noch ein Mass.” and in English to the following exchange: “Do you hear anything? Xaver is tapping a new keg. I’ll drink one more liter.”
Price Range: $350-$500
