“In Praise of Beer”

Catalog No. 2130

Pottery, cameo or relief, 0.5L, inlaid lid.

Text:
“Wer nicht liebt Wein, Weib, Gesang,
der bleibt ein Narr sein Leben lang.
Doch wer nicht liebt ein gut Glas Bier
der kommt mir noch viel dümmer für.”

(He who does not love wine, women, song
remains a fool his whole life long.
But he who does not love a good glass of beer
appears to me to be dumber yet.)

The central figure on this stein was almost certainly intended to represent Gambrinus, “the king of beer”, long a universal symbol of beer and brewing. It has been suggested that the character may be drawn from the claimed real-life inventor of hopped malt beer, Jan Primus (Johann I), a 13th-century Belgian Duke and President of the Brussels Guild of Brewers.
