Martin Luther, the famed 16th century Protestant reformer, was declared an outlaw by the Emperor Karl V in 1521 and, for his own safety, he was brought to the Wartburg, where he lived incognito for ten months during the years 1521 and 1522, calling himself Junker Jörg (Knight George).
