Design attributed to O. Hupp.
Shield bears the portrait of either Wilhelm I (right) or Wilhelm II (below left).
Emperor Wilhelm I (1797-1888) played a crucial role in modern history in that (with his Chancellor, Otto von Bismarck), he presided over the rise of Germany as a great European power.
Wilhelm II (1859-1941) succeeded his father, Friedrich III, who reigned for only ninety-nine days due to cancer of the larynx. Crowned Emperor of Germany in 1888, Wilhelm II built up the German military machine and a naval fleet to rival that of Great Britain. He was forced to abdicate under the terms of the Armistice ending World War I.
