These two steins were sold as a matched pair. The original 5,000 pairs were actually ordered by WEBCO in two lots. The first order, for 1,000 pairs, was placed in August of 1959, and the steins proved to be so popular that a follow-up order for 4,000 additional pairs was placed in November of that same year. These original pairs were marked, both under the handle and on the base, with Schultz numbered 59-CSM in blue, and Dooley numbered initially with a green 59-CDM and displaying a color-matched shamrock. The follow-up Dooleys were produced with a teal 59-CDM and shamrock as pictured on the right.
As can be seen below, the markings associated with the two separate orders also differed somewhat in both type size and content. Additionally, its worth noting that the some copies of the Dooley stein have been seen marked in blue. Regardless of marking variations, all surviving 1959 sets are generally considered to be original by collectors, with marking variations having little or no impact on pricing.
