The red mushroom hat with white highlights is intended to represent the distinctive Fliegenpilz (fly agaric mushroom). The Fliegenpilz is a common prop in German fairy tales involving gnomes (perhaps in part due to its hallucinogenic qualities), and is often seen worn as a hat, used as seat, or even serving as a gnome shelter.
Reproductions of this stein, some with markings similar to the originals, were made by Schierholz from about 1986 to 1995.
