Catalog No. 31
Porcelain, figural, 0.5L, lithophane (Neuschwanstein castle).
King Ludwig II of Bavaria (1845-1886), the Dream King, is best remembered for his castle-building. The most well known today is Neuschwanstein, but he was also responsible for Linderhof and Herrenchiemsee, two equally spectacular undertakings. Embattled over his spending and leadership, Ludwig was drowned in Lake Starnberg under questionable circumstances at the age of 40.
Reproductions of this stein, some with markings similar to the originals but without the lithophane, were made by Schierholz from about 1986 to 1995.
An unnumbered 1.5L version of this piece, apparently produced for store display purposes, is also known to exist. The larger version has no lithophane.
Price Ranges Original: $2,500-$3,200 Reproduction: $200-$300
