“Leopold von Dessau and Annaliese”

Catalog No. 655

Pottery, relief, 3.0L, pewter lid.

As a young man, Leopold I, Prince of Anhalt-Dessau (1676–1747), fell in love with Anna Louise Föhse (1677-1745), an apothecary’s daughter. Over the strenuous objections of his mother they were married in 1698. The marriage was long and happy, eventually producing ten children. In 1701 Anna Louise was granted the rank of Princess by the German Emperor, and following the death of Leopold’s mother, she often served as regent when her husband was absent on campaign.
