This stein commemorates the Tyrolean Rebellion of 1809. In 1805 Austria was defeated by Napoleon and had to cede Tyrol to Bavaria, Napoleon’s ally. The liberal reforms introduced by Bavarian Baron Montgelas were unpopular in conservative, staunchly Catholic Tyrol, which also objected to enforced military service in the Bavarian army. The Tyroleans, led by innkeeper Andreas Hofer, rose in rebellion in April 1809 but were ultimately forced to surrender. Hofer was executed in February 1810.
