The title given to this stein by the manufacturer was inspired by a poem entitled Der Kellergeist (The Cellar Ghost), written in 1814 by Gustav Schwab (1792-1850), which tells the tale of a friendly spirit who guards the wine cellar at night. Note that here the character is carrying a foaming beer stein, rather than the wine glass that’s typical in depictions of this sort, but of course beer cellars sometimes need protecting too.
