Franz Joseph was Emperor of Austria from 1848 until his death in 1916, as well as monarch of multiple states in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This stein, apparently produced in honor of the 40th anniversary of his reign, provides two depictions: one as he appeared when he acceded to the throne; and the other from 1888. The central image in the design shows Franz Joseph�s personal coat-of-arms.
