St. Hubertus is the patron saint of hunters among French and German-speaking peoples of Europe. The crucifix between the antlers of a stag symbolizes the vision that appeared to him at the moment of his epiphany.
Text is from a poem written by Wilhelm Mller in 1822 and set to music in 1823 by Konradin Kreutzer. The opening line makes reference to the Frster (forest ranger) and his traditional green uniform (Trachtenanzug).
