The Kaiser portraits in this case, repeated on three sides of the stein, are of Maximilian I (1459-1519), Holy Roman Emperor and King of Germany (1493-1519), remembered principally for unifying and substantially expanding the influence of the Hapsburg family in Europe. The Hapsburg dynasty would dominate that area of the world for several centuries thereafter and play a central role on the shaping of European history.
