Although Germany was still more than a century away from fielding a cricket team in international competition when this stein was initially produced (circa 1875), cricket is in fact the world�s second most popular sport and has been the de facto national sport of England since the late 18th century. Its worldwide popularity can be credited in large part to expansion of the British Empire, which at the end of the 19th century held dominion over approximately 20% of the world�s population.
