The lid relief depicts Xaver Krenkl (1780-1860), a repeat winner of the Oktoberfest horse race, but best known for his comment after overtaking the coach of King Ludwig I in Munich’s English Garden. When the king called out, “Doesn’t he know that overtaking the king is forbidden?” Krenkl famously replied, “Majestät, wer ko, der ko!” (“Your Majesty, those who can, do!”)
