Pottery or stoneware, threaded relief, 1.0L or 0.5L, pewter lid.
The number 1701 was used by M&W to designate a range of steins that varied widely in both size and decorating format. Threaded relief-decorated examples are sometimes found with hand-inked decoration numbers on the base, and sometimes with model and decoration numbers (e.g., 1701/62) shown in relief under the handle.
Same body style also found with varying transfer decorations.
