Daniel in the Lion’s Den

Catalog No. 1886

Pottery or stoneware, relief, 1.25L, pewter lid.

Central image taken from Chapter 6 of the Biblical book of Daniel, in which Daniel is condemned to be thrown into the lion’s den for continuing to pray to the God of Israel despite a degree issued by King Darius the Mede that no prayers may be addressed to any god or man other than Darius himself. The next day Darius visits the lion’s den to find Daniel still alive and that God had sent an angel to close the jaws of the lions because Daniel “was found blameless before him.”
