The two figures flanking the central shield depict the Roman deities Ceres, goddess of agriculture, and Hermes, god of commerce (wearing an inexplicable Homburg style hat). Their relationship to each other in this case is through beer, from growing of the barley (left side panel) through shipping of the finished product to market (right side panel).
