In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, fencing was a popular activity among upper-class German and Austrian students, and dueling scars such as the one depicted on the cheek of the student at the right were seen as a badge of honor.
The �radish juice� in the text makes reference to the large white radishes that are a favorite beer accompaniment in the Bavarian Alps.
