Catalog No. 1059
Pottery, relief, 0.5L, pewter lid.
As a young man, Leopold I, Prince of Anhalt-Dessau (1676–1747), fell in love with Anna Louise Föhse (1677-1745), an apothecary’s daughter. Over the strenuous objections of his mother they were married in 1698. The marriage was long and happy, eventually producing ten children. In 1701 Anna Louise was granted the rank of Princess by the German Emperor, and following the death of Leopold’s mother, she often served as regent when her husband was absent on campaign. Image taken from an 1888 engraving (artist unknown).
This stein exists in two virtually identical versions numbered 1059 and 11059 (presumably later). Sale prices tend to be in the same general range for both.
