Lohengrin’s Departure

Catalog No. 393

Pottery or stoneware, relief, 2.0L or 1.5L, pewter lid, signed “KB” (Anton Killian “Karl” Beuler).

The theme of this stein is taken from a medieval legend which tells the tale of the “Swan Knight”. Today, the story is most often associated with the Richard Wagner opera “Lohengrin”, first performed at Weimar in 1850. In this scene, following the failure of his wife Elsa to keep her vow to never inquire about his name or descent, Lohengrin prepares to depart forever in his swan boat.

The artwork is reproduced from a painting by Wilhelm von Kaulbach (1805-1874) entitled “Des Schwanenritters Abschied” (The Swan Knight’s Departure).

Master stein to No. 394. See also No. 390.
