The scene on this stein, taken from an ancient epic German poem entitled the Nibelungenlied, depicts the mythical hero Siegfried and his horse Greyfell (a gift to Siegfried from Odin, the chief god) as they cross a river to reach the mountain lair of Fafnir, the dragon guarding the powerful ring of the Nibelungs.
