The stork is a symbol of good fortune and fertility in the Alsace region on the Rhine River plain. The young girl with a stork in the central image is depicted wearing a traditional Alsace costume. Alsace was annexed by the German Empire in 1871 following the Franco-Prussian War, but reclaimed by France after World War I.
