Hans Sachs, referred to in the text, was a shoemaker, poet and a German master singer. He is remembered today largely as a result of being cast as the leading character in Richard Wagner�s opera, Die Meistersinger von N�rnberg (The Master Singers of Nuremberg).
The Frauenadler (eagle woman), depicted both on the lid and in the lower portion of the central image, has been a symbol of Nuremberg since at least the 17th century.
