“Lindenwirtin”

Catalog No. 195

Pottery or stoneware, relief, 3.5L, figural lid (Landsknecht), signed “KB” (Anton Killian “Karl” Beuler).

Text:
“Wohl bekomm’s!”
(To your health!)
“Keinen Tropfen im Becher mehr,
und der Beutel schlaff und leer,
lechzend Herz und Zunge,
angetan hat’s mir dein Wein,
deiner Äuglein heller Schein,
Lindenwirtin du junge!

(No more drops in the beaker,
and the purse is slack and empty,
with a parched heart and tongue,
smitten am I with your wine,
and your eyes’ bright shine,
Linden hostess so young!)

With the exception of “Wohl bekomm’s!” the text on this stein is the entire first verse from the poem “Die Lindenwirtin”, written by Rudolph Baumbach in 1876 and set to music in 1878 by Franz Wilhelm Abt. The poem honors Ännchen Schumacher (1860-1935), perhaps the most famous innkeeper in German history and a popular figure with German students.
