The discovery of mineral water wells in 1870 led to the growth of Mt. Clemens as a therapeutic tourist center in the late 19th century, replete with bath houses and luxury hotels. Following the Great Depression in the 1929, the bath house industry declined rapidly. The last operating bath house in Mt. Clemens closed in 1974.
