The scene on this stein is almost certainly intended to depict a celebration on the aftermath of the Battle of Teutoburg Forest (9 A.D.) in which an alliance of Germanic tribes ambushed and annihilated three Roman legions, resulting in a permanent halt to the expansion plans of the Roman Empire into territories east of the Rhine river.
