Scene taken from a poem entitled “The Trumpeter of Säckingen”, written in 1853 by Josef Viktor von Scheffel, which tells the story of a love affair between a trumpeter and Margaretha, a baron’s daughter. At Margaretha’s feet sits Hiddigeigei, the Baron’s cat and student of human behavior, a major character in the story. Original engraving entitled “Sehnsucht” (Longing) done in 1888 by Carl Schweninger (1854-1903).
