The figures on this stein depict three traditional German symbols related to drinking: the ram (Bock) represents Bockbier, a strong dark beer that is the first drawn from the vats in the springtime; the monkey (Affe), as is true in many cultures, represents excessive drinking (monkey on one’s back); and the tomcat (Kater) is both a symbol and German idiomatic expression for a hangover.
