It’s interesting to note that in apparent recognition of the avant-garde nature of the art on this stein and its companion ( No. 847), the typically explicit D&B manufacturer’s catalog (circa 1910) describes this stein as simply “Bierseidel, Flachboden, graviert” (beer stein, flat bottom, engraved), with no mention of subject-matter.
