“Falstaff and Bardolph”

Catalog No. 536

Pottery, relief, 0.5L, pewter lid.

Sir John Falstaff is one of the most famous comic characters in all English literature, appearing in four of Shakespeare’s plays and later in Giuseppe Verdi’s final opera Falstaff, which was inspired principally by Falstaff’s follies in Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor. Bardolph appears in both works as Falstaff’s drunken companion. This particular depiction is taken from a painting by Eduard von Grützner (1846-1925).
