Schlaraffia is a worldwide German-speaking fraternal organization founded in Prague in 1859 with the goal of fostering art, humor and friendship. At the time, Prague was the capitol of Bohemia in the Austrian empire and a major German cultural center. The organization takes its name from Schlaraffenland, the land of milk and honey, or Utopia, of German legend. Today Schlaraffia has some 280 chapters on five continents, although sadly the founding chapter in Prague is not among them, having fallen victim to Nazi purges in the 1930s.
