Images of Hercules

Catalog No. 107

Pottery or stoneware, relief, 0.5L, pewter lid, signed “PD” (Peter Dümler).

The centrally depicted “Herkules Farnese” (Farnese Hercules) shows the ancient Roman hero and god leaning on his lion skin draped club. On display at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples since 1787, the 11½-foot statue is probably an enlarged third century AD copy of an original fourth century BC sculpture that adorned the Baths of Caracalla in Rome. Side images are titled “Trunkener Herkules” (Drunkard Hercules) and “Herkules bädigt d. Kerberos” (Hercules tames the Cerberus).
