The manufacturer’s title for this stein (“Die Wacht am Rhein”), as well as the second text string, are taken from a 19th century German patriotic anthem, written in 1840 by Max Schneckenburger and set to music in 1854 by Karl Wilhelm.

The central image depicts Germania, an ancient symbol that personified the strength, unity and liberty of Germanic peoples.

The figural set-on lids available for this stein (below right) depict Jupiter, ruler of the Roman gods, or his daughter Minerva, goddess of both wisdom and war.
